Super Cup: East Bengal fined Rs 5 lakh, Rs 10 lakh fine for 5 other clubs

first_imgSuper Cup: East Bengal fined Rs 5 lakh, Rs 10 lakh fine for 5 other clubsEast Bengal have been asked to pay Rs 5 lakh for pulling out of Super Cup in March-April, while Churchill Brothers, Gokulam Kerala FC, Neroca FC, Aizawl FC and Minerva Punjab FC have been asked to pay Rs 10 lakhadvertisement Next Press Trust of India New DelhiMay 16, 2019UPDATED: May 16, 2019 22:26 IST AIFF have asked East Bengal to pay Rs 5 lakh for pulling out of Super Cup (@eastbengalfc Photo)The All India Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee Thursday imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh each to five I-League clubs, including former champions Aizawl FC and Minerva Punjab FC, while East Bengal were told to pay Rs 5 lakh for pulling out of Super Cup in March-April.Churchill Brothers, Gokulam Kerala FC and Neroca FC were the other three clubs fined Rs 10 lakh each. The Committee did not give any decision against Mohun Bagan and referred the case for arbitration since the Kolkata side did not sign for participation. The premier knockout club tournament among I-League and ISL teams was severely depleted this season following the boycott by seven clubs — Minerva Punjab FC, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Churchill Brothers, NEROCA FC, Gokulam Kerala FC and Aizawl FC.”The Committee thus imposed penalty of Rs 10 lakh upon Aizawl FC, Churchill Brothers, Gokulam Kerala FC, Minerva Punjab FC, and NEROCA, each, to be utilised exclusively for benefit and further development of football at grassroot level and towards promotion of youth football in the country through proper transparent modalities with appropriate checks and balances and audit,” the six-page judgment, accessed by PTI here, read.”In default of payment by any club, the AIFF would be at liberty to consider disqualification of the clubs from participation in its next edition competitions,” it added. On East Bengal, the Committee observed that the club intended to participate but the sponsors revolted to the decision.”The club cannot be held guilty of indiscipline or misconduct. It is the sponsors of the club (Quess) who committed so and intended to jeopardise the integrity of the competition.advertisement”Balancing upon the degree of culpability the Committee felt that in order to reduce the humiliation upon East Bengal, quantum of fine should be less than the other clubs and imposed penalty of Rs 5 lakh.”The clubs revolted against the AIFF and sent a letter on February 18 requesting the president of AIFF to address the various issues, including lack of clarity regarding the future of I-League and lack of an agenda for the game at the grassroots level.Terming this subversive, the order said: “Sports bodies cannot be hijacked or held under any threat by a group of vested interested persons or the clubs. Neither the president nor any office bearer has any individual power or authority to do so.”Hence, demanding that unless the ‘President’ of the AIFF meets a particular Group of Clubs, they would not participate in the National Competition that too after entering the Competition and undertaking to ensure faithful compliances of the Regulations of the Competition, is nothing but intending to hold the National Federation under ransom and such subversive conduct cannot be claimed to be ‘bonafide’ and should be dealt with appropriately. Also Read | Kean Lewis signs contract extension with Bengaluru FCFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Exactly a year after FIFA World Cup heartbreak, England make amends in cricket

first_imgExactly a year after FIFA World Cup heartbreak, England make amends in cricketICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Is it really coming home this time? A year after Gareth Southgate’s men agonoisingly lost the FIFA World Cup semi-final in Moscow, Eoin Morgan-led English cricket team raised hopes of their maiden Cricket World Cup win with a dominant performance in the semi-final against 5-time champions Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday.advertisement Next Akshay Ramesh BirminghamJuly 12, 2019UPDATED: July 12, 2019 13:24 IST Tale of 2 World Cups for England: July 11, 2018 – semi-final loss; July 11,2019 – semi-final win (Getty Images/AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSEngland lost the FIFA World Cup 2018 semi-final on July 11 in MoscowEoin Morgan’s men crushed Australia to progress to World Cup 2019 finalEngland will face New Zealand in the final at Lord’s on SundayEngland believed that the World Cup was coming home. There was a genuine buzz about the country’s football team that punched above its weight and made it to the last-four of FIFA World Cup in 2018 in Russia.Millions had gathered at pubs and public screenings across the major cities in England. At the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, England fans waited for history to unveil. They hadn’t reached the final of a FIFA World Cup since 1966, which was also the last time they won the Jules Rimet Trophy.England had survived some tough situations in the knockout stages. Their Round of 16 win over Colombia that was decided on penalties showed the new English side, under Gareth Southgate, was capable of holding the nerves at crunch moments. When Kieran Trippier found the back of the net as early as the 5th minute of the semi-final, the English fans reassured themsleves that the World Cup was coming home. Howver, at the end of 120 minutes of a fiercely-fought battle, England’s World Cup dream was over. Croatia won the semi-final 2-1 after Mario Mandzukic’s winner in the 2nd half of extra-time.England football team had won millions of hearts but no trophy to show for. England were unable to put behind the disappointmenet of the semi-final heartbreak and the impact of the defeat was seen in their listless display against Belgium in their third-place playoff defeat.Cut to July 11, 2019, England did not mess it up this time in the semi-final. Eoin Morgan’s men were up against five-time champions Australia in the last-four match of World Cup 2019.advertisementOdds were stacked in favour of Australia as they hadn’t lost a single World Cup semi-final in 8 previous attempts before heading into the Edgbaston tie against England on Thursday.Eoin Morgan’s England a win away from bringing it homeHowever, England came up with a ruthless performance that saw Australia comfortably outclassed and ousted from the World Cup.After opting to bat first, Australia were jolted early by Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes. The holders never recovered from the early loss of wickets even as Steve Smith scored a valiant 85. Australia ended with 223 on the board.A Jason Roy-Jonny Bairstow special at the top of the order saw England make light work of the target as they got past the finish line in just 32.3 overs. The World Cup 2019 semi-final was one-sided so much so that Australia captain Aaron Finch conceded that the 8-wiciket defeat was their “worst performance” in a World Cup match.England have lived up to the billing of pre-tournament favourites. They suffered a dip in form after back-to-back loses ot Sri Lanka and Australia in the group-stages but have bounced back in style.Eoin Morgan speaks to the media after England’s #CWC19 semi-final triumph over Australia. #WeAreEngland | #AUSvENG pic.twitter.com/y2tVkEg6VICricket World Cup (@cricketworldcup) July 11, 2019New Zealand are waiting in the final which will be played at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s. That means you don’t have to dim the lights for the screen to really radiate. Then when the TV is turned off, the pallet across the screen is a deep and intense blackness. The huge color spectrum made available via Dolby Vision’s high dynamic range images can be credited for the enhanced visual quality of the Blid 9. This project with AXE is about staying fresh when the pressure is heavy. Forget the naysayers and own it.”We caught up with Lil Boat and asked for some of his tips grooming greatness. The Manual: Can you give us the backstory on your signature red braids?LY: In grade, I braided my hair because I wanted to look like Kris Kross, this old rap hip-hop group that had braids with colorful rubber bands. My hair was short, so I did two strand twists. And then it grew, and I just wore braids, just braids. And then they grew real long. They were black at the time. When I got a job offer at McDonald’s my mom wanted me to be so presentable, so she made me cut my hair. So that was real sad. I cut my hair. And then she saw I was so sad because my hair was the only thing keeping me different, so then she was like well why don’t you dye it red? So I dyed it red, and it’s been red ever since eleventh grade.Lil Yachty/FacebookTM: How do you take care of it?LY: Shit, I don’t. My shit fell out. It grew back. But, nah, I’m on the road a lot. The bleaching and the heat takes a toll on my hair. So, I try to do what I can. But honestly, I don’t do what I should do. It’s sad but it’s true. When I get braided I get it washed, deep conditioned, I put oils in it and all that good stuff. I get it braided like once a week if I can get to a stylist.TM: Who braids it? Do you have a go-to stylist?LY: I go to the same lady at home. I’ve been going to her since high school.TM: There’s a rumor going around the internet that your braids are insured?“You gotta stay fresh. When you smell good, you feel good. When you look good, you feel good.”LY: No, that’s not true, they fell out before and no one paid me for it.TM: Do you shave? And how often?LY: My face, as soon as I see an inch of hair. I try to keep a baby face. My facial hair grows, I just try to keep it low.TM: Do you have a favorite shaving product?LY: I don’t shave myself. I have a barber. He doesn’t actually shave it. He uses clippers.TM: Do you use moisturizer on your face? LY: Yeah, I like to use moisturizer. I don’t travel with any, and I’ve been kind of iffy with hotel lotion. So, I don’t do it much because I’m never really home. But I like to make my skin look very smooth and chocolatey.Courtesy of AxeTM: What about your tattoos? How do you take care of them?LY: I’m gonna come clean. I probably put something on there one time. You’re making me feel bad.TM: Sorry! Let’s make you feel good. How does AXE Gold give you dating confidence? LY: Smelling good is key important. Have you ever been on a date and someone just didn’t smell too good? It’s not the best, right? It’s like a deal breaker, especially on the first date. You gotta stay fresh. When you smell good, you feel good. When you look good, you feel good. All these key elements add up to making someone feel gold. When you feel gold, you feel good. Then you pretty much are good and can’t anybody say otherwise.TM: Tell me about your personal style?LY: I have my own style. I like throwback looks a lot. I like the 90’s. I like colors and baggy jeans. I like what I like.TM: What is your favorite city to shopLY: LA. But I haven’t been to Japan yet. I can’t wait to go.last_img read more

Civil Servants Urged to Commit to Improving Service Delivery

first_img As the nation’s civil servants celebrate Civil Service Week 2013, Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Douglas Saunders is urging them to place special emphasis on improving the level of customer service to the public.Ambassador Saunders, who is head of the civil service, noted that while public servants face constraints with respect to resources such as equipment, they should commit to enhancing service delivery.“It is true that service can be enhanced by having tools, which would assist and expedite things but most importantly, is how we as individuals relate and treat the people we serve. University Establishes Scholarship in Honour of Education Minister

first_imgStory Highlights The BAU International University in Washington DC has established a scholarship in honour of Education, Youth and Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid. The decision to set up the ‘Ruel Reid Transformational Leadership Scholarship’ was taken by the University to recognise Senator Reid’s lead role in arriving at a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry and the University for the provision of 107 scholarships, over three years, worth $378.2 million (US$3 million). These scholarships are available to student teachers to pursue undergraduate and graduate programmes at any of the tertiary institution’s campuses globally.BAU University Board member, Paul Brunson, said the Ruel Reid Scholarship is to “pay homage and respect to Senator Reid for leading the process”.The surprise announcement, which was made during the MOU’s recent signing at The Mico University College in Kingston, left Senator Reid at a loss for words and saw him welcoming the gesture with an elated “I’m speechless!”.Mr. Brunson said the scholarship is open to any Jamaican student desirous of pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies, either in the United States or any of BAU Global Network’s campuses in Germany, Italy and Turkey, among other locations. The MOU, resulting from the discussions between Senator Reid and Mr. Brunson, whose grandfather was Jamaican, between 2016 and earlier this year, will additionally see the University hiring 200 English language teachers for its global network of schools for the 2018/19 academic year.Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Audrey Marks, and the Ministry’s newly appointed International Donor Consultant for the Jamaican Diaspora in the US, Gail Dunwell, who works closely with the National Education Trust, were also instrumental in initiating the partnership.Senator Reid, in welcoming the MOU, conveyed the Government’s gratitude to BAU University.“I have had the opportunity of meeting different segments of the Jamaican diaspora (who) are always very interested in what is happening in Jamaica, and particularly how they can assist our education programme. We are very grateful for the strength of the Jamaican connection,” the Minister said.“There are Jamaicans in very prestigious positions all over the world, and wherever they are able to influence certain decisions, we find that they always step up to the plate,” he added.Mr. Brunson said the initiative’s genesis dates back 10 years when he first met his grandfather. He said the knowledge of his heritage was the primary reason for seeking out how best he could make a tangible and meaningful contribution to Jamaica.Against this background, Mr. Brunson said he made representation to the University’s administration and successfully lobbied their support in March 2016, which resulted in the MOU’s forging.“So for all these reasons and more, I am excited and I am proud. This is only the beginning of this relationship,” he added.President of The Mico, Dr. Asburn Pinnock, said the initiative is a “perfect fit” with the Government’s focus for education.“I think this will go a far way in building our resources as we try to graduate more persons in Jamaica from tertiary education,” he argued.BAU International University is a private, non-profit institution that offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in economics, international affairs, entrepreneurship, global affairs, and international law and economics. The BAU Global Network, which spans three continents, has been providing higher education for over 15 years through its campuses, which are also located in Canada and Hong Kong. Its flagship campus is Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul, Turkey, which has eight faculties, a school of languages, and two vocational schools. JIF Hailed A Success: JAMPRO Says Opportunities for Major Investments

first_img Addressing a JIS Think Tank on Tuesday (June 26), Manager for Sales and Promotions at JAMPRO, Ricardo Durrant, said that the forum sparked great interest among potential investors, with good leads and the potential for major projects. The Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) is reporting that the recently held Jamaica Investment Forum (JIF) was a success and has created opportunities for sound investment projects. The Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) is reporting that the recently held Jamaica Investment Forum (JIF) was a success and has created opportunities for sound investment projects. The forum, held from June 12 to 14 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James, focused on six priority sectors – agri-business, business process outsourcing (BPO), energy, logistics, manufacturing and tourism.Addressing a JIS Think Tank on Tuesday (June 26), Manager for Sales and Promotions at JAMPRO, Ricardo Durrant, said that the forum sparked great interest among potential investors, with good leads and the potential for major projects.“Over 400 persons attended the forum, of which some 200 were in the investor category, and these investors held over 100 meetings over the two days with key sector leaders and government ministers who attended,” he informed.Mr. Durrant said that the main sectors of interest are logistics, energy and tourism, and “we are also seeing interest in cybersecurity, which is a direct result of the work that we have been doing in the BPO sector and our information technology infrastructure”.He pointed out that a cybersecurity hub will enhance the country’s capabilities in banking, BPO, and other data-sensitive industries. The investors at JIF came from 18 countries across the globe, including Japan, Singapore, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, United States of America and the Caribbean.Mr. Durrant noted that more than 80 per cent of the investment interests have top-level positions in their companies, such as presidents, vice presidents and chief executive officers.“These are key decision-makers, and when they meet with other decision-makers, it makes them comfortable, as they have discussions and meetings and are able to move their projects along,” he pointed out.Mr. Durrant said that with the strong leads and deep interest, the next level is to work with the potential investors “to ensure that these investments are landed properly and effectively”.“We estimate that combined, these investors are managing funds of over US$100 billion, and if we can get those projects landed in Jamaica, you can see the effect it will have on our gross domestic product (GDP) growth, our employment and all the things that we want to achieve in Jamaica,” he said.On her part, President of JAMPRO, Diane Edwards, told JIS News that the forum achieved its main objectives of connecting with new investors to attract more interest from the global investor scene, progressing existing investment interests, and attracting international media.“So, on all those fronts, we have succeeded as we have actually brought on board new investors; we have connected with existing investors right across the board, and particularly in the six sectors that we targeted; and had some 15 international media houses attending,” Miss Edwards said. She noted, too, that several persons remained after JIF to deepen conversations and investigation of Jamaica.“A conference is really just the start of a relationship, as investment happens between people who are in a relationship and who are in a relationship with a country that they want to invest in.“So JIF opens doors for us, sets a stage for us, provides a platform for us and now, the next step for JAMPRO is to follow up on those investment interests that we have stimulated and awakened. It is for us to hold the hand of these investors and take them through the next steps in their progression of investment,” Miss Edwards said. The staging of JIF in 2012 and 2015 were huge successes for JAMPRO, attracting some US$300 million in investment and generating some 7,000 jobs. The forum, held from June 12 to 14 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James, focused on six priority sectors – agri-business, business process outsourcing (BPO), energy, logistics, manufacturing and tourism.
