University Establishes Scholarship in Honour of Education Minister

first_imgStory Highlights The BAU International University in Washington DC has established a scholarship in honour of Education, Youth and Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid. The decision to set up the ‘Ruel Reid Transformational Leadership Scholarship’ was taken by the University to recognise Senator Reid’s lead role in arriving at a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry and the University for the provision of 107 scholarships, over three years, worth $378.2 million (US$3 million). These scholarships are available to student teachers to pursue undergraduate and graduate programmes at any of the tertiary institution’s campuses globally.BAU University Board member, Paul Brunson, said the Ruel Reid Scholarship is to “pay homage and respect to Senator Reid for leading the process”.The surprise announcement, which was made during the MOU’s recent signing at The Mico University College in Kingston, left Senator Reid at a loss for words and saw him welcoming the gesture with an elated “I’m speechless!”.Mr. Brunson said the scholarship is open to any Jamaican student desirous of pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies, either in the United States or any of BAU Global Network’s campuses in Germany, Italy and Turkey, among other locations. The MOU, resulting from the discussions between Senator Reid and Mr. Brunson, whose grandfather was Jamaican, between 2016 and earlier this year, will additionally see the University hiring 200 English language teachers for its global network of schools for the 2018/19 academic year.Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Audrey Marks, and the Ministry’s newly appointed International Donor Consultant for the Jamaican Diaspora in the US, Gail Dunwell, who works closely with the National Education Trust, were also instrumental in initiating the partnership.Senator Reid, in welcoming the MOU, conveyed the Government’s gratitude to BAU University.“I have had the opportunity of meeting different segments of the Jamaican diaspora (who) are always very interested in what is happening in Jamaica, and particularly how they can assist our education programme. We are very grateful for the strength of the Jamaican connection,” the Minister said.“There are Jamaicans in very prestigious positions all over the world, and wherever they are able to influence certain decisions, we find that they always step up to the plate,” he added.Mr. Brunson said the initiative’s genesis dates back 10 years when he first met his grandfather. He said the knowledge of his heritage was the primary reason for seeking out how best he could make a tangible and meaningful contribution to Jamaica.Against this background, Mr. Brunson said he made representation to the University’s administration and successfully lobbied their support in March 2016, which resulted in the MOU’s forging.“So for all these reasons and more, I am excited and I am proud. This is only the beginning of this relationship,” he added.President of The Mico, Dr. Asburn Pinnock, said the initiative is a “perfect fit” with the Government’s focus for education.“I think this will go a far way in building our resources as we try to graduate more persons in Jamaica from tertiary education,” he argued.BAU International University is a private, non-profit institution that offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in economics, international affairs, entrepreneurship, global affairs, and international law and economics. The BAU Global Network, which spans three continents, has been providing higher education for over 15 years through its campuses, which are also located in Canada and Hong Kong. Its flagship campus is Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul, Turkey, which has eight faculties, a school of languages, and two vocational schools. Vancouver appears to be out as World Cup city after BC raises

first_imgVICTORIA – It appears that Vancouver, which hosted the Women’s World Cup final in 2015, will not be part of the North American 2026 World Cup bid.The British Columbia government couldn’t come to an agreement with the so-called unified bid committee, representing Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, to host the men’s world soccer showcase.B.C. Tourism Minister Lisa Beare said Wednesday the provincial government’s submission was rejected.“We submitted our second bid last night and this morning we received notification that they’ve not accepted the bid,” Beare said. She said the government had concerns about the potential costs to taxpayers of hosting World Cup games at B.C. Place in Vancouver.“There’s very large concerns with the bid,” Beare said. “One of them being with FIFA to unilaterally change the stadium agreement at any point. That adds unknown costs and unknown risks to the B.C. taxpayers.”Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton and Montreal had been identified as potential candidate cities for the 10 games that Canada would host under the unified bid plan.Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said his city had been willing.“Major sporting events often have challenges around costs and managing financial risk. However, the city was all-in and hopeful that the federal and provincial governments would be able to arrive at a fair deal,” he said in a statement.“While I’m disappointed by this outcome, I look forward to pursuing further opportunities to bring world-class soccer and other sporting events to Vancouver in the future.”The Canadian Soccer Association declined a request for comment. The unified bid, which is up against Morocco to host the 2026 tournament, is due to deliver its bid book to FIFA by the end of the week.A decision on the winning bid will be made June 13 at the FIFA congress. It is up to FIFA, the world governing body of soccer, to make the final choice on candidate cities. Barring a change of heart, it looks like Vancouver will not be on the list should the unified bid prevail. The federal government threw its support behind the committee Tuesday with a promise of $5 million in immediate help if the bid wins.Earlier Wednesday, Beare said B.C. remains open to hosting some of the games if its requests to clarify financial obligations are met.“The prospect of hosting the FIFA World Cup is exciting for soccer fans and has the potential to bring significant economic and cultural benefits to British Columbia,” she said in a statement.“While we support the prospect of hosting the World Cup, we cannot agree to terms that would put British Columbians at risk of shouldering potentially huge and unpredictable costs.”Liberal legislator Jas Johal said he doesn’t understand why B.C. is out of the World Cup bid.“What is it that B.C. is unsure of,” he asked. “Why is Toronto moving forward? Montreal is moving forward. Edmonton is moving forward.”The new competition format will feature 16 groups of three with the top two from each pool advancing to a 32-team knockout. The tournament time period will remain at 32 days.last_img read more

The Last Bush Tries To Survive In The Party Of Trump

first_img Share LM OTERO / APTexas land commissioner George P. Bush attends a 2016 Veterans Day celebration. He’s running for reelection with President Trump’s endorsement, two years after his father’s presidential bid failed amid withering insults from Trump. In a dynasty that dates back over 60 years in American politics, there is just one member of the Bush family left in any state or federal elected office.Texas land commissioner George P. Bush is the one carrying the torch and facing a stiff primary on March 6, barely two years after his father Jeb’s presidential bid failed as Donald Trump took over the Republican Party. To survive, the younger Bush has decided to adapt to — rather than resist — the new direction of the GOP.The Bush family political dynasty goes back to 1952. That’s when Prescott Bush became a U.S. senator from Connecticut. Then his son George H. W. Bush became president. Jeb Bush would become governor of Florida. After six years as Texas governor, George W. Bush won the presidency, as well. Since he left office nearly a decade ago, there’s been a lag.In 2014, George P. Bush announced he was running for Texas land commissioner.Almost as soon as Bush entered that race, he was projected to win. The entire campaign turned into more of a victory tour then political race.“He was a young, vibrant, good looking guy. So he looked like a central casting, next generation Bush candidate, starting in Texas but with national possabilities,” Southern Methodist University political science professor Cal Jillson said. He breezed through the 2014 GOP primary, easily won the general election in a deep red state, and already had some Republican activists talking about future races for governor — or even president someday. Then the realities of holding office began to sink in. There are questions about how well his office has handled Hurricane Harvey relief. He’s also received bad press over his handling of the Alamo. You know, the one we’re supposed to remember all the time. Those issues brought criticism from some in the party, and motivated Bush’s predecessor, former land commissioner Jerry Patterson, to challenge him in the GOP primary. Patterson had left the office in 2014 in a failed attempt to run for lieutenant governor. So facing a tough primary, George P. Bush has sought out the most coveted endorsement in Republican politics: President Trump. This might be considered a hard endorsement for Bush to get. Trump was the man who labeled his father “low energy Jeb” and blamed his uncle for 9/11 during the 2016 GOP presidential primaries. Trump even made a disparaging statement about the fact that George P.’s mother was born in Mexico. His father, uncle and grandparents all said they didn’t vote for Trump in the 2016 general election. But George P. Bush endorsed Trump anyway.“From Team Bush, it’s a bitter pill to swallow,” Bush told supporters during a speech in 2016. “But you know what? You get back up and you help the man that won, and you make sure that we stop Hillary Clinton.”And now that Bush needs help, President Trump is there to provide it. In a tweet from Feb. 27 Trump said, “Texas [land commissioner] George P. Bush backed me when it wasn’t the politically correct thing to do, and I back him now.”While this may appear to be a friendly relationship, the truth is President Trump has rejected much of what the Bush family stood for in politics — whether it’s onimmigration or foreign policy. Yet, George P. Bush is still trying to bridge that divide.SMU’s Jillson wonders whether George P. Bush can fully evolve in what’s now Trump’s party. “And now I think people have real questions about what the upside of George P. Bush as a politician and an office holder actually is,” he said.If Bush loses his GOP primary race on March 6, that could have pundits across the country talking about the end of the Bush political dynasty.Still, it’s a big family. Just because George P. was expected to lead the next generation doesn’t mean one of his cousins won’t.Remember, the family always believed Jeb would be the second president from the Bush dynasty, while George W. lost an early congressional campaign and seemed to enjoy running a baseball team into his forties.last_img read more
