Kelly Steadman scored a hat trick for the fifth-ranked Lakers (15-4-0, 1-0-0 CHA), which held a 43-23 shot advantage over the Orange on the night.Mercyhurst flexed an efficient power-play attack early in the first period to get the scoring started. With a five-on-three skating advantage, Lakers forward Christine Bestland buried a shot from in tight past SU goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater on an assist from Jess Jones. The Orange responded when Shiann Darkangelo took a feed from Jessica Sorensen and fired a shot into the net for her second goal of the season.Syracuse battled back and forth with the Lakers for most of the opening period. After Mercyhurst took a 2-1 lead, Margot Scharfe let a wrist shot go from the left side, narrowly beating Mercyhurst goaltender Hillary Pattenden to even the score. But the Lakers offense, led by Steadman, continued its dominance from that point forward. Steadman’s late first period goal gave the Lakers a two-goal lead, and her rocket from the top right corner in the second period – which gave Mercyhurst a 6-3 advantage — would prove to be the dagger.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textSteadman completed the hat trick on an empty net with 1:51 left in the game to seal the win for the Lakers. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.—Compiled by Austin Mirmina, staff writer, [email protected] center_img Commentslast_img
