Shanghai welcomes Toronto ensemble to New Music Week with doors and ears

The Torontonians kept good company in Shanghai, appearing alongside international-class colleagues from Paris, Amsterdam, and Athens, performing before overwhelmingly young audiences, and to Soundstreams fell the particular responsibility of representing North American music, presenting works by three Canadians, R. Murray Schafer, Nicole Lizée and Juliet Palmer, and two Americans, John Cage and Steve Reich. Twitter Facebook Login/Register With: Just as Chinese musicians represent an increasing presence in western concert halls, the Middle Kingdom, as it used to be known, is admitting increasing numbers of their western counterparts to perform and teach. An anniversary volume published a few years ago by Shanghai’s Grand Theatre pictures a large number of top-tier visiting western artists, from pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy to the seemingly inevitable tenor/baritone Placido Domingo, so when Soundstreams turned up on the conservatory’s stages no heads turned. LeSean McCoy Says Feud Over With Osi Umenyiora

LeSean McCoy of the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants’ Osi Umenyiora have been feuding mostly through social media for about a year now, and it was some of the most hilarious and personal attacks athletes have taken to each other. So, it is with some sadness that McCoy said on a Philly radio station that the two star players have ended their mano-a-mano back and forth. They agreed, according to McCoy, to put aside their differences and squash it after the Eagles pulled out a victory over the Giants on Sunday“I think after the game, it’s time to get over this Osi-and-LeSean thing, because after the game (Umenyiora) said ‘You’re a heck of a player. We’re in this business. Let’s get over this,’ ” McCoy said in an interview with SportsRadio 94 WIP in Philadelphia.“(Umenyiora) said ‘Let’s be done with it.’ Being a bigger man, also for myself, you’ve got to focus on the Giants, they’re a good team already. My goal is not an inter-division battle with Osi. It’s with the Giants, and trying to get to the Super Bowl,” McCoy said. So, where did the drama between the Pro Bowlers begin and why? That is unclear. However, it can be traced back to Mother’s Day, when Umenyiora posted on his Twitter account: “Happy Mothers Day Lesean Mccoy! Enjoy your special day!!”McCoy came back at the Giants’ defensive stalwart. He Tweeted that Umenyiora was “soft” and “overrated,” which are fighting words to a defensive lineman who takes pride in his acumen like Umenyiora. And so, Umenyiora came back in the summer by calling on McCoy on Twitter “Lady Gaga” and “she,” which are fighting words to a running back who takes pride in his acumen and toughness like McCoy.It seemed to have died down after that. But last week, during an interview fore ESPN’s E:60 program, McCoy called Umenyiora “a ballerina in a Giants uniform.”Instead of escalating the feud from there, the men called a truce. But it was good while it lasted. read more

Now, a local non-profit has launched a fundraising campaign to ensure that the historic carousel in the park will entertain many generations to come. When the Friends of Balboa Park arranged to buy the carousel from a private owner in San Diego last spring, it also decided to set a fundraising goal of $3 million to pay for the purchase and restoration of the 1910 Herschell — Spillman carousel. The antique carousel features more than 50 animals, including horses, a reindeer, giraffes, frogs, a dragon and pigs. There are probably fewer than a dozen of these antique menagerie carousels still operating worldwide which also allow riders to play a game called the “brass ring.”The carousel which came to California in 1912 became a permanent attraction at the park in 1922.Carousel manager Bill Brown told us the motor that powers the carousel is the original. Also original, the band organ that churns out sheet music with hit melodies from 1910.Although a schedule of regular maintenance and paint touch-ups have kept the carousel operating for almost a century, the executive director of the Friends of Balboa Park said it’s time for major restoration work.John Bolthouse said the group’s fundraising campaign will pay for improvements such as treating the building that houses the carousel for termite infestation, as well as installing new wiring and a sprinkler system. Some of the funds will also be spent on enhancing the appeal of the area around the carousel, As Bill Brown, the carousel manager told us, the only downside of the carousel occurs when the ride ends, “and the kids don’t want to go and it’s hard to get them off the carousel.”Looking ahead, the Friends of Balboa Park hopes the antique carousel with its fantastic menagerie of creatures won’t ever have to stop and can keep on riding into the future. If you would like to donate, click HERE.
