You’ve got mail! How postal workers are staying safe during the pandemic

first_img“It feels surreal, but, it made me proud that we’re needed,” said Romero. BINGHAMTON (WBNG) – While many essential workers are fighting on the front lines, local postal workers are making sure you get your mail in this crisis. At the United States Postal Service facility in Binghamton, one of the mail delivery workers is Frank Romero. He’s been working in the service for 17 years and says the pandemic is not going to stop him from delivering on his route. With the CDC informing people that the coronavirus can live on surfaces like paper and cardboard for much longer than originally thought, Gendrin says it’s best to be careful when picking up your packages from your mail carrier. He says while he can’t stop by and say “hi” to people around the area, Romero says many are showing gratitude by waving to him, leaving him cookies, and other things.center_img Romero added he is following protocol, saying USPS supplies them with wipes, hand sanitizer, cleaner spray, and more to make sure whatever they touch and hand off is clean. Meanwhile, USPS Supervisor, Shawn Gendrin, says he’s proud and thankful of how hard the employees at his facility have been working. He added they are not just delivering your bills and letters, but also, “We deliver people’s remains, medications, a lot of different things that people count on every single day.” The best thing to do is to open the package, slide the item out without touching it, discard the boxing, and immediately wash your hands.last_img read more

Al-Zarqawi’s death applauded by lawmakers

first_img“With al-Zarqawi no longer obstructing the road to liberty in Iraq, I am confident we will be able to work with the Iraqi people to bring long-term peace and stability. Together with our allies and the Iraqi government, we can secure a free, democratic and prosperous future for Iraq.” – Rep. Gary Miller, R-Brea “The killing of Abu Musab al Zarqawi by U.S. forces … is a much-needed piece of good news. Zarqawi was a bloodthirsty thug and an indiscriminate killer of innocent men, women and children. All Americans join in congratulating the American military and the Iraqi people for their success in tracking, finding and eliminating the most vicious terrorist in Iraq. “While Zarqawi’s death is likely to grab most of the headlines today, Prime Minister Al-Maliki’s announcement that he has filled the crucial vacancies in the Interior, Defense and National Security ministries may prove more important to Iraq’s future, which will be determined politically and not by force. The Iraqi government must demonstrate to its people that it has the power, legitimacy and vision to assume primary responsibility for securing and governing the country – a necessary precondition to ending the insurgency, warding off a full scale civil war and allowing successful reconstruction to begin. “In the last three years we have heard many claims of turning points and milestones, and we must be under no illusion that these events will quell the violence. They will not. But I do hope these twin developments – the elimination of the terrorist Zarqawi and the filling of these key security posts – will assist the new Iraqi government’s efforts to take over its own security and hasten the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.” – Rep. We have yet to capture this mastermind behind the terrorism perpetrated on the world. This is one more for freedom and the people in Iraq can begin the road to recovery that will lead to the eventual phasing out of U.S. troops. “It’s not over, but I am hoping this is the beginning for those people to become the country they can be. The great news is the cabinet is now complete. With the nice reward offered, the next one we will be elated about the capture of, or demise, is bin Laden.” – Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Santa Fe Springs “For more than three years, American forces have fought bravely on the streets of Iraq to bring democracy to the Middle East. They have been challenged in this effort because of insurgents who would rather have Iraq become a breeding ground for violence and extremism. This valiant struggle has tested our commitment to the Iraqi people and our resilience in the war against tyranny and terror. “Today, the terrorist ideology has lost its foremost leader in Iraq, a man who brazenly murdered innocent citizens to advance his campaign of fear and violence. The death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has moved us closer to establishing a stable and secure Iraq and is an important milestone on the march toward freedom. I am extremely proud of the work of our American troops in finding this criminal and bringing him to justice. last_img read more

Plastic-bag billboard a world first

first_imgThe eye-catching recycled plastic billboard at OR Tambo International. (Image: Net#work BBDO) Schoolchildren benefit from the solar- powered billboard that stands in their school grounds. (Image: Treehugger) Crafters hard at work on Nedbank’s recycled plastic billboard. (Image: Net#work BBDO)Janine ErasmusLeading South African financial services provider Nedbank is once more setting the pace in good environmental practice, with a billboard made entirely of recycled plastic bags at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport.Claiming that “Only one bank can truly call itself the green bank”, the billboard was hand-made by a group of seven crafters, all of whom are the breadwinners in their families. It took six weeks and more than 2 000 recycled plastic shopping bags to make the remarkable 40m-long advertisement.Nedbank’s head of marketing Greg Garden said the new creation showed the bank’s commitment to doing things differently, and would hopefully serve as an example and inspiration to South Africans.“Too many South Africans don’t understand the need to recycle as a way of preserving our environment,” commented Garden in a statement, “and this billboard represents just one of Nedbank’s efforts to change this mindset and demonstrate the practical application of recycling principles in everyday life.”With its Climate Change Position Statement issued in March 2009, Nedbank became the first South African bank to make a firm pledge to reduce its impact on the environment in terms of energy, water and paper usage, as well as carbon emissions. The banking group has set targets of a 12% reduction in energy and carbon emissions by 2015, as well as a 5% water and 10% paper reduction by 2010.Positive impactThe resourceful advertising agency in charge of the Nedbank brand is Cape Town-based Net#work BBDO.BBDO’s executive creative director Rob McLennan said the Nedbank campaign was an example of how the agency is building its clients’ brands whilst maintaining an awareness and respect for environmental matters.“This billboard has created jobs, married advertising with social conscience, showcased our local artistry and has removed some of the country’s non-biodegradable rubbish,” he said.Although reusable plastic shopping bags are considered better for the environment than paper bags because they need less energy to produce, transport and recycle, a bag may take hundreds of years to degrade.Award-winning innovationThis is not the first time Nedbank has shown that it has a conscience where the environment is concerned, and has turned that conscience into innovation. In 2006 its first solar-powered billboard in Alexandra township, east of Johannesburg, won the Outdoor Grand Prix at the prestigious Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.Said to be the world’s first solar-powered billboard, it is titled “Power to the People” and has 10 solar panels. Harnessing the fierce power of the African sun, each panel generates 135 watts of power that provides energy for the MC Weiler Primary School in Alexandra, in whose grounds the billboard stands. The school saves over US$240 (R2 000) a month in electricity fees and furthermore can supply a hot meal daily to its 1 100-plus pupils, many of whom will not get a decent meal anywhere else. Stored energy gathered from the solar panels during the day lights the billboard at night. The ground-breaking hoarding swayed the jury with its contribution to the upliftment of the community. Jury chair Jean-Remy von Matt described it as work that continues to work and to provide, in contrast with the many short-lived promotions that ultimately serve little or no purpose.According to Net#work BBDO, the power generated is enough to boil 18 1-litre domestic kettles continuously at any one time.Helping the communityTowards the end of 2007 Nedbank’s second solar billboard was installed at the Athlone Youth and Family Development Centre in Athlone on the Cape Flats, south-east of the Cape Town city centre. However, this one also has a wind turbine for extra power generation, providing energy for the kitchen, security lights and geysers. This drastically cuts the community centre’s monthly electricity bill. The centre works with youth in the area, many of whom come from troubled homes and have become drug addicts and school dropouts. It provides a home for to up to 22 youngsters at a time, helping them to overcome their addiction, go back to their families, and rebuild their lives.Director Sydney Dicks described the billboard as a godsend, saying that it has enabled the centre to install a 200l solar-powered geyser and two security floodlights as well as slash the monthly bill.Do you have queries or comments about this article? Apple’s iTunes 9 Music Offerings Lack True Genius

first_imgTags:#Apple#music#web As is the trend with every Apple-related announcement, Apple stock rises during the hype of initial rumors and drops shortly after the keynote simply fails to live up to expectations. Apple could’ve put a man on the moon this morning and fanboys would’ve still expected a monkey on Venus. Although users were not blessed with the announcement of a Beatles’ release, the company did offer Genius Mixes and the iTunes’ LP. ReadWriteWeb covered the news earlier this morning, now we take an in-depth look at Apple’s latest music-related releases. Genius Mixes With the new iPhone OS, iTunes automatically creates playlists using choices from the user’s pre-existing music library. Twelve default playlists appear under the device playlist section and users can also create Genius Mixes on their own by selecting a song and setting length parameters. While it’s certainly a cool feature, it’s tough to tell how common songs are paired. We suspect songs are categorically matched rather than matched via musical similarities. This could be a problem if you only listen to music categorized as “eighties”. iTunes LP: Unsurprisingly, the iTunes’ LP effort (codenamed Cocktail) is a mild let down. While the LPs do offer liner notes, videos and special tracks, they don’t necessarily offer more than what fan sites offer. And fan sites continue to evolve while these LPs will not expand in scope. If Apple really wanted to make this amazing, it would open up the “interactive album” into something that fans could actually interact with rather than just consume. The LP is definitely a gorgeous collection of media, but it’s confined to a CD-rom like experience when it doesn’t have to be. Sharing Features: While it may seem like a small change, greater Facebook and Twitter integration with the iTunes store may have huge affects on how we consume music. For now, users can add music to their Wishlists and share the links to their Twitter and Facebook friends. Automated messages default to a plain link; however, they can easily be used for gift registry purposes. Depending on how information is used to sync to social networks in the future, music and playlist gifting via social networks may take over from those silly $1 birthday animations. 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… Related Posts 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…center_img 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout dana oshiro 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe Applast_img read more

Santosh Hegde apprehensive over final outcome of Lokpal bill

first_imgKarnataka Lokayukta and a member of the Lokpal Bill drafting committee Santosh Hegde on Saturday said he was apprehensive about the final outcome of the proposed bill as it could be a watered down version of what was originally envisaged.”The discussion on the bill is nearly over and after the last meeting…of what you read between two parties, they do not seem to see eye to eye and hence I am apprehensive of the outcome of this effort,” a candid Hegde said.”They will a bring a bill for a certain, but how strong the bill is going to be is a question,” the former Supreme Court judge, who represents civil society on the Lokpal panel, said.Expressing his doubts, he said, “They do not want the PM to come under its scope, they do not want the judiciary, they do not want military purchases being investigated nor the central government employees nor the corrupt conduct of MPs outside the House but having implications inside House.”On the CBI being kept out of the RTI Act, he said, “Today they want to keep out CBI, tomorrow it will be the police”. Once an investigation was over, there could be sharing of data to ensure transparency, he opined. However, he was of the opinion that the current strong anti-corruption feeling would have some bearing on elections. “One day the government will realise they had got an opportunity to earn a good name, but that they had missed the bus,” said the Lokayukta.advertisement- With PTI inputsFor more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more

It allows us to train in a way where you probably can’t do it at home, at this moment, with it being so cold,” reported Carrick. “We can work on different things. When it’s freezing cold at home, you’ve got to keep on the move and you don’t want the lads standing around too much.“So here we’ll work hard, especially over the next few days, and prepare for Sunday, but it allows us to maybe spend a little bit more time on the training ground and go into a little bit more detail, which we need at this moment.“As you can imagine, it’s quite a happy camp. When you’re winning football matches, you can’t put a price on the feeling that gives you, and the confidence and the belief.”You almost sense a calmness when you’re winning games. It’s great to see the lads enjoying themselves. The football’s flowing, the training’s good, they’re bouncing around the place, and it’s nice to see.” last_img read more

UP oppn alliances first rally Mayawati says BJP will lose due to

first_imgDeoband (Saharanpur, UP): BSP supremo Mayawati Sunday slammed both the BJP and the Congress at the first joint rally with SP and RLD here, leas than a week before voting for the first phase of voting. “BJP will lose this election because of policies inspired by hatred.. especially their “chowkidar” campaign… no matter how much the chhote, bade chowkidars try, the BJP will not win,” she said. Addressing the rally in the presence of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and RLD chief Ajit Singh, she said, “The Congress has failed despite ruling for so many years,” Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details The BSP chief said, “Our government, instead of giving minimum income support, will give employment to poor people. Indira Gandhi too made a 20-point programme to remove poverty, but was it effective?” She said, “We are silent workers, unlike other parties. Our party performs without making noise, we are silent workers. The Congress too has been making tall claims, haven’t they been given enough chances for decades? They were wiped out from several states. The Nyay scheme is not a stable solution for removing poverty.” Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday At the same time, she said the BJP government has been misusing probe agencies. “Even the people from backward communities are suffering… The divisive thought process of these parties are hurting these communities… At the Centre, or state level… reservation issue for these communities was ignored. These communities are not benefiting from the reservation. They are being exploited. Minorities are also suffering.” Mayawati said corruption has increased at every level. “The Congress was tainted by bofors. BJP government is tainted by Rafale… The BJP government has been misusing probe agencies – CBI, ED – against its rivals. You don’t need to give another chance to them. The parties that have already been given enough chances In the election season, political parties use opinion polls to misguide voters. Do not get swayed,” she appealed to the voters. She assured the electorate that if voted to power, farmers will no longer be in debt. “Sugarcane farmers are suffering in UP… their grievances are being ignored amid empty announcements. When our party was in power, we made sure dues of sugarcane farmers were paid,” the former chief minister said. Mayawati said the BJP’s poll promises have still not been fulfilled. “The ground realities can’t be ignored. BJP will keep endorsing its hawa-hawai (lofty) schemes till the poll results are announced. Thousands of crores have been wasted… That’s taxpayers money… could be used for the poor…If PM was serious about welfare of poor, they would not have been inaugurating schemes after poll dates were announced… they would have performed in five years of tenure. In the last budget… whatever announcements were made by centre are nothing but empty poll promises,” she said. “Now that BJP is panicking, you should know BJP on its way out… and grand alliance will arrive. After Independence, for a long time Congress and BJP were in power… even in the Congress-ruled states, wrongful practices came to notice… so they eventually lost voter base… =========== BJP misusing Pulwama issue, GST & note ban caused huge job loss; don’t allow these people to come back, Mayawati tells Deoband rally.last_img read more

But we did get a glimpse of what one might look like in baseball’s just-concluded postseason. This spring, we introduced a new pitching statistic called the goose egg — named in honor of Gossage, the Hall-of-Fame reliever, who had a record 82 goose eggs in 1975. Essentially, a pitcher gets a goose egg for every clutch, scoreless relief inning (see the original article for a more formal definition). Goose eggs have a substantially better correlation with relievers’ win probability added than saves do, especially if paired with their companion statistic, the broken egg. This year’s major leader in goose eggs was the Milwaukee Brewers’ Corey Knebel, who finished with 47 of them. The American League leader was the Seattle Mariners’ Edwin Diaz, who had 40. You can find a complete rundown of this year’s final goose stats in the table below. (A “broken egg” is essentially the blown save of goose stats, and a “meh” is any situation which doesn’t result in either a goose egg or a broken egg.) ColeWAS100+0.1 Justin HaleyMIN110-0.2 However, from an efficiency standpoint, the best season came not from Knebel or Diaz but from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Kenley Jansen, who finished with a perfect record of 44 goose eggs and no broken eggs. That’s the most-ever goose eggs without a broken egg. The Dodgers used Jansen smartly and lined up his 68.1 innings pitched to coincide with mostly high-leverage situations. He made 15 multi-inning appearances, entered with runners on base 12 times, and often pitched in tied games — all things that closers weren’t doing much of a few years ago. And Jansen generated 6.3 goose wins above replacement (GWAR) in the regular season, the 7th-highest total of all-time. After Jansen, the next most-valuable season came from Knebel, who finished with 3.9 GWAR — which ranks just 200th among relief pitching seasons all-time.If you want a model for a more Gossage-like usage pattern, you need to look no further than … how Jansen was used in the postseason. Jansen appeared in 13 of the Dodgers’ 15 playoff games and threw 16.2 innings. Extrapolated out to a full, 162-game regular season, that would work out to a Mike Marshall-like total of 180 relief innings.Jansen didn’t keep his perfect streak alive in the playoffs. Instead, he allowed 2 broken eggs to go with 6 goose eggs. He was also used in some situations that we wouldn’t recommend — for instance, to close out an 11-1 lead against the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS. Still, his postseason goose egg pace would extrapolate to 65 goose eggs over a 162-game regular season. What I’m really advocating for is a hybrid between how pitchers like Jansen are currently used in the regular season and the entirely different way that they’re used in the postseason. The extra off-days the playoffs provide help to enable more creative usage patterns that might not be viable in the regular season. And even with those extra rest days, Jansen may have been overused in not-very-clutch situations in the NLCS and NLDS; perhaps as a result, he was not especially sharp in the World Series. At the same time, he went from throwing 4.7 percent of the Dodgers’ regular season innings to 12.3 percent of their postseason innings — almost a threefold increase. Surely there’s a happy median somewhere in between? But congratulations to Jansen and Knebel, and we’ll resume our hunt for goose eggs next year. In the meantime, you can download detailed data on goose eggs and broken eggs for all pitchers since 1930 here. read more

Ferdinand slammed Jones for his penalty tackle

first_imgChelsea won the FA Cup final against Manchester United 1-0 thanks to Eden Hazard’s converted penalty and this decisive moment of the game was caused by silly Phil Jones’ challenge in the penalty box.Rio Ferdinand believes that the decision of Phil Jones was completely wrong and he misread the whole situation in the penalty area as he tackled Eden Hazard way too late – and this was the moment that decided the whole game. The former United centre-back spoke about the penalty situation as he said, according to 101 Great Goals:“Jones gets himself in a pickle from start to finish.”“Here his body position is all wrong, he’s the wrong side in terms of facing the opponent.”harry maguire, manchester UnitedMaguire says United need to build on today’s win George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Harry Maguire wants his United teammates to build on the victory over Leicester City.During the summer, Harry Maguire was referred to as the ultimate…“He doesn’t know where Eden Hazard is, that’s his biggest problem.”“Then once he reacts the touch is that good and he’s that quick, and at this world-class level he’s panicking, he’s in turmoil.”“But here, once he releases he can’t win the ball there, turn and face your goal.”“Run towards your goal. Don’t gamble that you’re going to nick it in front of Hazard, he’s too quickly.”“Run towards goal and make the recovery and be in-between the goal and the ball.”last_img read more
