Narcotrafficking Increased by 50 Percent Under Maduro, Says US Military Chief

first_imgBy AFP January 02, 2020 Drug trafficking to and from Venezuela increased by more than 50 percent under Nicolás Maduro, said the U.S. military leader for Caribbean, South and Central American affairs on November 14, when denouncing Maduro’s ties to organized crime.U.S. Navy Admiral Craig Faller, commander of U.S. Southern Command, said Maduro, in power since 2013, has helped narcotraffickers and criminals’ activities, and given refuge to “terrorist groups,” which he accused of “destabilizing” the region.“We’re seeing an increase in drug trafficking placed out of Venezuela that is aided and abetted by the illegitimate Maduro regime,” said Adm. Faller at the opening of the Caribbean Nations Security Conference in Miami.“In fact, the Maduro regime has a negative impact on every single security aspect in this hemisphere. All the challenges are made worse by the Venezuelan crisis,” he added. In his statements to the press, Adm. Faller said the Maduro government, whose authority the United States doesn’t recognize, is getting rich through drug trafficking.“There’s over a 50 percent increase of narcotrafficking in and through Venezuela, and Maduro and his cronies are lining their pockets, in cahoots with the illicit narcotrafficking,” he said, not specifying a time period for this increase.Adm. Faller said “terrorist groups” like the National Liberation Army (ELN, in Spanish) Colombian guerrilla and dissidents of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC, in Spanish), who didn’t agree to the 2016 peace process in Colombia, “have safe haven in Venezuela.”He said, “they can operate to threaten and destabilize the region, threatening good neighbors and democracies like Colombia.”The U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions on 27 entities and 22 people for drug trafficking linked to Venezuela. They include former Vice-President Tareck el Aissami, former chief of financial intelligence Pedro Luis Martín, and businessman Walid Makled.last_img read more

New Zealand PM unruffled as quake hits mid-interview

first_imgNew Zealand lies on the Pacific Basin “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide generating more than 15,000 earthquakes a year, although only 100–150 are strong enough to be felt.A shallow 6.3 quake in the South Island city of Christchurch killed 185 people in 2011, while a 7.8 shake slightly further north in 2016 was the second strongest ever recorded in the country.Ardern canvassed the prospect of a major quake as New Zealand entered a seven-week COVID-19 lockdown in late March, saying it was always a possibility.”In my mind constantly, as the prime minister of the ‘Shaky Isles’, is — no matter what’s going on in our lives — we must always be prepared for that,” she told reporters. The country’s official GeoNet seismic monitoring service put the strength of Monday’s quake at 5.8 and said there were around 40 aftershocks.”Felt as a long, strong shake in Wellington. That was not very much fun,” one Twitter user wrote.Another person reported “quite the shake in Wairarapa”, east of Palmerston North.”I hope everyone else is OK,” he said on Twitter.Topics : But there was sustained shaking in Wellington, where Ardern was being interviewed on breakfast television from parliament’s Beehive building, which is designed to absorb seismic forces by swaying slightly on its foundations. Why am I not surprised that Jacinda Ardern casually takes an earthquake interrupting her interview in her stridepic.twitter.com/mq4h6LuTfC— 🇳🇿 • eloise • 🇫🇷 (@reyloise) May 24, 2020″We’re just having a bit of an earthquake here, Ryan,” Ardern told Auckland-based AM Show presenter Ryan Bridge, briefly looking concerned as she scanned the room around her.”Quite a decent shake here, if you see things moving behind me,” she said, smiling, as she quickly regained her poise and continued the interview.”It’s just stopped,” she said. “We’re fine, I’m not under any hanging lights, I look like I’m in a structurally sound place.” A moderate 5.6-magnitude earthquake rattled New Zealand’s North Island early Monday but failed to crack Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s trademark composure as she conducted a live television interview. The quake struck just off the coast before 8:00 am local time (2000 Sunday GMT) at a depth of about 52 kilometres (32 miles) near Levin, about 90 kilometres north of Wellington, the US Geological Survey said.St John Ambulance and New Zealand Police both said there were no initial reports of injuries or damage. There was no tsunami warning.last_img read more

Warriors star Kevin Durant discusses Anthony Davis’ decision to request a trade

first_img“We talk about it,” Durant said. “We all as players, we want guys do exactly what they want to do in this league. They have a finite amount of time, so why not do what you want?”Davis is averaging 29.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game this season. He wants to be dealt to a “championship” contender, Paul said. “It’s not that serious. Why not talk about it?” Durant said, via the Mercury News. “AD wanted to play basketball somewhere else. It’s not like the president is shutting down the government. It’s just basketball.”Durant said speculation about where Davis will end up is “definitely a topic of conversation” in Golden State’s locker room. KXIP hat-trick hero Sam Curran: Fans who left early would be very disappointed

first_imgDelhi Capitals were cruising to victory with Rishabh Pant and Colin Ingram at the crease during their 62-run fourth-wicket partnership in the 167 run chase against Kings XI Punjab. But the game changed within a couple of deliveries as Pant lost his middle stump to a Mohammed Shami yorker in the 17th over.Delhi Capitals were 144 for 3 before Pant got out. They lost their last 7 wickets for 8 runs to eventually lose the match by 14 runs against Kings XI Punjab at the IS Bindra stadium in Mohali on Monday night.Sam Curran and Mohammed Shami were the wreckers-in-chief for the home side with the England all-rounder finishing with 4 wickets for 11 runs in 2.2 overs while the Indian speedster bagged a couple of wickets in his second spell.Curran ended up taking a hat-trick to become the youngest player in the history of the IPL to achieve the feat. The record was held by Rohit Sharma, who is now captain of Mumbai Indians. In 2009, Rohit had taken a hat-trick at the age of 22 years and 6 days.He had picked up the wicket of Harshal Patel with the final ball of the 18th over and then returned in the final over to remove Kagiso Rabada and Sandeep Lamichhane to complete his hat-trick, something which he didn’t realise himself until a teammate came and informed him.”I had no idea I had taken a hat-trick. My main focus was that last over when Rabada came and I knew his strengths and where I could bowl. I was always aiming for the stumps and toes.advertisement”When we won the game one of the players came up to me and told me about the hat-trick. Little did they know that Shami and Curran would change the course of the game within 16 balls and register one of the most memorable wins for Kings XI Punjab.Curran said he felt sorry for the fans who went home early. “The crowd was so loud towards the end. Then Ashwin’s run out of Chris Morris first ball was a huge turning point in the game. We know what Morris can do.”Bowling towards the end I just had one plan, the ball was reversing a bit. Plaxico Burress Took A Twitter Jab At Jim Harbaugh, Michigan

first_imgPlaxico Burress close up.plaxico burress upset michigan state nebraska gameSince taking over at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh has certainly gone above and beyond in terms of recruiting. Whether it’s sleepovers, climbing trees, going to class with recruits or moving spring practice to Florida for a week, Harbaugh is committed to selling his vision in any way possible. The future is Harbaugh’s biggest selling point, as the Wolverines haven’t been elite lately. In recent years, Michigan has been on the short end of the stick against arch-rivals Michigan State and Ohio State. They’ve lost 11 of 12 to the Buckeyes and seven of eight to Sparty. Taking all this into account, former Michigan State star Plaxico Burress dropped a quick jab at Harbaugh and his recruiting tactics on Twitter this morning. According to Burress, while Harbaugh has to peddle his program, the Spartans simply have to point to the results. Looks like J Harbaugh is pulling out all stops to get kids to Michigan. We @MSU_Football just believe in the product. Don’t have to sell us— Plaxico Burress (@plaxicoburress) March 1, 2016Plax has a point because Michigan State has been the premier program in the state of Michigan the last several seasons. However, Harbaugh did lead his team to a 10-3 record in his first year and was one insane fluke play away from beating the Spartans. The Wolverines also have an outstanding recruiting class on the way. Will the Maize and Blue begin dominating its in-state rivals starting in 2016? We won’t go that far, but this series should be much closer in the coming years.last_img read more

Canadas Walk of Fame to add Donovan Bailey Anna Paquin Viola Desmond

first_imgTORONTO – Six influential Canadians from the circles of sports, entertainment and culture will be added to Canada’s Walk of Fame next month.Olympic gold medallist Donovan Bailey, Oscar-winning actress Anna Paquin and civil rights pioneer Viola Desmond, are among the diverse selection of people who will be inducted at the annual awards gala in Toronto on Nov. 15.The others are Canadian folk icon Stompin’ Tom Connors, telecommunications leader Ted Rogers and science TV host and environmental activist David Suzuki.Half of this year’s honourees are posthumous recognitions as the organization’s incoming CEO Jeffrey Latimer attempts to draw equal attention to Canadians outside the entertainment and sports worlds.Desmond, who died in 1965, emerged as a figure who challenged racial segregation in Nova Scotia during the 1940s after being jailed for sitting in the whites-only section of a movie theatre. She fought the charges in court, and after losing various proceedings, closed her business and left the province. Desmond is often credited as Canada’s Rosa Parks, even though her trial pre-dated Parks’ 1955 challenge of bus segregation in Montgomery, Ala.In 2010, Desmond was given a posthumous pardon and an apology from the Nova Scotia government. More recently, she was featured in both a Heritage Minute and chosen to grace the new $10 bill. She is only the second honouree to be recognized specifically for her social justice work, after Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour was inducted in 2014.Connors, who died of kidney failure in 2013, is hailed as a writer of Canada’s cultural songbook with staples like “Bud the Spud,” “The Hockey Song” and “Sudbury Saturday Night.”Rogers, the late president and CEO of Rogers Communications Inc. who died in 2008, is considered a seminal figure in Canada’s broadcasting landscape. His upstart company stepped into the cable industry in 1967 and in the decades that followed became a dominant player in TV, radio and publishing.Bailey is a two-time Olymipic gold medallist and three-time world champion sprinter who once held the 100-metre world record.Actress Paquin is the youngest Canadian to win an Academy Award, capturing the honour for her role in the 1993 film “The Piano.” She has gone onto play Rogue in the “X-Men” movie franchise and Sookie in HBO’s “True Blood.”Suzuki, who holds a PhD in zoology, rose to international fame with his CBC-TV program “The Nature of Things,” which has aired around the world. He’s also an outspoken activist for numerous causes, including his own David Suzuki Foundation which encourages living in a sustainable environment. This year’s Canada’s Walk of Fame additions bring the number of inductees to 173. The ceremony will be broadcast in a one-hour TV special on Dec. 3. Eric McCormack, star of “Will & Grace” star and a former inductee, will host the festivities.last_img read more

Pot deliveries OKd into Calif communities that ban sales

first_imgLOS ANGELES — California endorsed a rule Wednesday that will allow home marijuana deliveries statewide, even into communities that have banned commercial pot sales. The rule by the state Bureau of Cannabis Control was opposed by police chiefs and other critics who say it will create an unruly grey market of largely hidden pot transactions, while undercutting local control. The rule cleared by state lawyers Wednesday clarifies what had been apparently conflicting law and regulations about where marijuana can be delivered.Cannabis companies pushed for the change, since vast stretches of the state have banned pot activity or not set up rules to allow legal sales. They say consumers in those areas were effectively cut off from legal marijuana purchases, even though sales are legal in California.Michael R. Blood, The Associated Presslast_img read more

Consortium threatens to stop Panama Canal expansion

first_imgA Spanish-led consortium threatened Thursday to halt a massive, $5.3 billion (3.9-billion-euro) expansion of the Panama Canal, which handles five percent of world maritime trade, because of a row over cost overruns.Spanish builder Sacyr, leader of the Grupo Unidos por el Canal consortium, said work will stop unless the canal pays $1.6 billion in cost overruns for work on the 80-kilometre (50-mile) waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.“GUPC has formally informed the Panama Canal Authority that it will suspend work if the failures to comply are not put right within the advised period,” Sacyr said in a statement to Spanish market regulators. The consortium said it had set the canal authorities a 21-day deadline before suspending the project to install a third set of canal locks. The news sent Sacyr shares plunging by more than 18 percent as trade opened on the Madrid stock exchange. By late morning they were down 8.95 percent at 3.43 euros. On Wednesday, Panama canal administrator Jorge Quijano warned that the canal authority would use contractual mechanisms to ensure the completion of the canal expansion.“No matter what kind of pressure is exercised against the ACP (Panama Canal Authority), we maintain our demand that Grupo Unidos por el Canal respect the contract that they agreed to and signed,” he said in a statement quoted by Panama media.A year ago, GUPC demanded an extra payment of $1.6 billion from the ACP due to construction delays.Led by Spain’s Sacyr, the consortium also includes Impregilo of Italy, Belgian firm Jan De Nul and Panama’s Constructora Urbana. It began work on a third set of locks for the canal in 2009 and expects to complete construction in June 2015, already a nine-month delay over the date set in the contract. The new locks will accommodate larger ships with a capacity of 12,000 containers — instead of those with 5,000 containers that are now able to navigate the canal. Some 13,000 to 14,000 ships navigate the canal each year.According to the canal authority, there was a delay of four months shortly after the project began because GUPC had planned to use lower-quality cement that would have prevented the construction from lasting more than 100 years. But Sacyr said the GUPC consortium had submitted justified claims for $1.625 billion in cost overruns due to “unforeseeable” circumstances to the relevant authorities, including the International Court of Arbitration.“GUPC is maintaining communication with the Panama Canal Authority to reach a satisfactory agreement to put an end to the contractual imbalance,” it added. The canal uses a system of locks to raise ships from sea level and enable them to sail through the continental divide.last_img read more

More People Are Running Fewer Are Playing Bar Sports

Running, jogging and triathlons are in. Football, paintball and horseback riding are out. So are sports that can be enjoyed with a beer — or three. That’s the quick take on the latest survey from the Sport & Fitness Industry Association, released Monday. The group — a partnership of six industry associations — fielded nearly 20,000 surveys in January and February, asking Americans (both individuals and households) about their physical activity last year. Overall activity was flat, a turnaround from declines in recent years.Individual sports and activities, though, showed bigger changes, some of them dramatic. The number of people who participated at least once in adventure racing or a traditional triathlon increased by more than 25 percent last year compared with the year before. Meanwhile, nonmotorized scooter-riding and non-inline roller skating experienced big declines.Even with such a big sample, year-by-year changes in individual sports may not mean much. I limited the analysis to activities with an estimate of at least 2 million participants last year, but that still means a change of 10 percent could be a difference of just a dozen or so respondents. And that’s when looking at total participants. The group also reports more regular participants, but that means an even smaller sample size. (Also, as I noted when writing about this survey in a recent piece, the survey is fielded only in English, which could skew results for activities that are unusually popular or unpopular among U.S. residents who are less comfortable speaking to strangers in English.)We get a more reliable picture when looking at five-year trends.Triathlon and adventure racing still top the gainers list. Kayaking, trail running and yoga are other solitary or noncompetitive endeavors increasing in popularity. Meanwhile, activities popular in bars or in other venues where beer often is sold — including pool, darts and bowling — are losing ground. So are all varieties of football — though touch football sustained the biggest percentage decline, suggesting concussion fears aren’t solely to blame. To sum up: We’re bowling alone — or together — less often, but running, paddling or posing more. read more

Opinion European soccer could be next big thing for American fans

Manchester United’s Juan Mata, left, and the Los Angeles Galaxy’s Gyasi Zardes fight for the ball in an exhibition game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., on July 23. Manchester won, 7-0.Credit: Courtesy of MCTAmerican sports fans are always looking for the next big thing. With a number of sports trying to leave their mark over the years, soccer has seemed destined to lag behind, with legions of fans and media types wondering when it will finally reach mainstream popularity in America. They can stop wondering. Some may credit this summer’s highly-entertaining World Cup in Brazil, which featured the world’s biggest stars Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, its share of villains, like Luis Suarez and his bite or Arjen Robben and flopping, and the advantage of being one of two sporting events that the world turns to collectively. But for the college-aged generation and younger, soccer has been a premier and attractive sport for much longer than people without a finger on the pulse realize.Recognizing this, some of the top European clubs have flocked to America for matches that, despite the fact that they amount to what the preseason is for the NFL, are thrilling for fans. It is a perfect business model for European clubs: they see a growing market and realize they can provide a superior product than the hometown teams can.Manchester United, the most historically successful, and hated, club of the English Premier League, went on a preseason tour of the U.S. that began with a match against the L.A. Galaxy in July. The 84,362 fans in attendance at the Rose Bowl witnessed a thorough drubbing by United, who dropped the Galaxy 7-0 in a match that certainly did no good for the MLS.As part of the 2014 International Champions Cup — technically a tournament, although it is really only friendlies for the European clubs — United also took on Italian notables Roma and Inter Milan –– getting a victory and a draw, respectively –– before the big one: a showdown with Real Madrid in Ann Arbor, Mich.Real, of Spain’s La Liga, have an embarrassment of riches. The club team of not only one of the most famous athletes in the world in Ronaldo, Madrid’s confines are also home to too many superstars to list. Their match against Manchester United was hotly anticipated, and it came as no surprise that it set the record for the largest turnout for a soccer contest in America.A 3-1 final score in favor of Manchester left the mostly red-clad crowd satisfied, and although it had been declared he would not play, the subbing in of Ronaldo for the final twenty minutes had the crowd in hysterics. With that win, Manchester United advanced to the final of the tournamentUnited took the title from Liverpool, another English club team on a U.S. tour, 3-1.Liverpool’s most notable game stateside was a contest against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City –– a victory for Liverpool played at Yankee Stadium. Attendance fell just below 50,000, more than it has been for any Yankee game this season. The teams playing these friendlies in America are not here for simple preseason warm ups. Their brand is expanding to America, and these clubs want to be here now that they see America as a cash cow. Manchester United is worth $2.81 billion, and they didn’t get there by isolating themselves — their marketing and reputation has turned them into possibly the best known sports organization in the world. Four of the top 10 most valuable franchises are European soccer clubs, with Real Madrid weighing in at $3.44 billion. With English and Spanish teams showcasing their talents in the U.S., they remind us that there is not much reason to give much thought to Major League Soccer. The best team in MLS looked totally outclassed in their match with United. Add that to the fact that Manchester was playing more than 5,000 miles from home, and the embarrassment keeps mounting for the Galaxy. We need to let go of the belief that MLS needs to be popular for soccer to make its mark in America. The best players in the world play elsewhere and fans have no interest in watching something that is not world class — it is the same reason we don’t care about Minor League Baseball or the Canadian Football League. The game at Michigan Stadium is definite proof that European soccer has reached its highest level of fandom, a level that MLS may never come close to. Two foreign clubs squared off in the largest stadium in the country, and filled it to near capacity.Maybe someday MLS will improve enough to be popular in America. For now though, American fans are content just watching Ronaldo warm up. read more

2018 Big Ten Preview Nebraska Cornhuskers

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska 2017 Record: 4-8 (3-6 Big Ten) Head Coach: Scott Frost 2018 Record: 0-3 (0-1 Big Ten) All time record vs. OSU: 1-5 What happened thus far in 2018:After the first game of the season against Akron was cancelled due to an ongoing rain delay, the first game of the Scott Frost-era at Nebraska was against Colorado, an old Big 12 rival. Nebraska kept pace in the first half in a back-and-forth affair, leading 21-17. However, a second half filled with turnovers helped push the Buffaloes to the 33-28 win. The Cornhuskers continued their poor performance in Week 2, falling to Troy at home 24-19. In Week 3, Nebraska suffered its worst loss of the season, losing 56-10 to Michigan, largely due to inconsistent quarterback play and crucial turnovers. Impact Player:Wide receiver Stanley Morgan appears to be emerging as a solid pass catcher for Frost. He has been the lone bright spot in an otherwise struggling Nebraska offense, tying wide receiver J.D. Spielman for the team lead with 13 catches for 200 yards and a touchdown. Strengths:Despite the rough start to the season, Nebraska’s offense is beginning to improve under Frost’s new spread system. With Morgan and Spielman in the receiving game, Nebraska quarterbacks have completed 63.8 percent of their passes. If the Cornhuskers can get consistent quarterback play from sophomore Andrew Bunch and freshman Adrian Martinez, then they might have a chance to improve throughout the rest of Big Ten play. Weaknesses:A lot of things have gone wrong for the Cornhuskers this season. First, they were held to just 61 total yards of offense through three quarters against Michigan. Nebraska did not score a touchdown until the fourth quarter and were held to 132 yards by the end of the game. Second, the defense has struggled, surrendering 300 passing yards in each game. They also have struggled to stop the run, allowing 200 yards rushing against Troy and Michigan. This is a young team under Frost and they will look to improve and start making progress over the course of Big Ten play. In order to do this, they will have to have playmakers step up on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. read more

Credit: Sal Marandino | For The LanternThe Ohio State baseball team will take a hot offense up against the solid pitching staff of Hawaii. The Buckeyes (10-10) hope to continue their winning ways at home against the Rainbow Warriors (9-11) in a four-game series starting Thursday. The Buckeyes have won three of their past four games, while Hawaii has lost six of its past seven.
