Fishpond Innovates For Anglers

first_imgRecycled materials and nature-inspired designs highlight Fishpond’s 2014 lineFishpond, Inc. designs products that take anglers out to the places that make the world beautiful. The Colorado-based company’s products are not only functional and well built, but have a sense of ethos connected to the environment that inspires them.Said John Le Coq, fishpond designer, co-founder and co-owner: “Fishpond has differentiated itself, from the very first products introduced in 1999, as a company that embraces color. We are critically aware of how the subtle nuances of light interacts with mood, and how color mixes with our emotions. The influences of the Colorado landscape have become intertwined with our choice of fabrics, texture and color. As well, the duality of hard and soft textures, which we find at timberline with hard granite rock juxtaposed next to the softer and fragile alpine moss, is similar to the Fishpond designs that combine hard molded EVA components with fabrics. Our designs often have a western touch that is influenced not only by color, but in design details that come from western clothing, old trucks, fenceposts and tumbleweed. The American West is where all fishpond partners were born and raised, and we collectively share in the design process to make sure we are true to our roots and authentic with every stitch we create.”This spring the company will introduce more than a dozen new or improved fishing packs and vests featuring a lightweight, recycled fabric made from old commercial fishing nets.fishpond savage creek chest packNot only is this apropos for a fishing based company, but the recycled nylon makes an incredibly light and durable material. With everything from an external frame backpack for anglers to carry large loads of gear, to small waist and chest packs, this new water resistant recycled fabric is being combined with YKK Aquaguard zippers on the exterior.New products for S14 lead off with the Black Canyon Backpack ($179.95). With an adjustable external frame, offset air mesh back and padded, contoured shoulder straps, this backpack helps carry loads and keeps anglers cool while hiking into remote fishing destinations. The modular design allow docking compatibility with many of Fishpond’s chest/lumbar packs, and two zip-out rod tube holders comfortably carry fly rods.About 400 cu.in. smaller, the Bitch Creek Backpack ($149.95) has all of the same features as the Black Canyon minus the external frame. Instead, this pack has a structured air mesh back panel to comfortably carry loads. It also has two smaller pockets for extra items. Also featuring the new recycled-net poly fabric are four new chest or lumbar packs. First is the Yampa Guide Pack ($119.95) — with two main zippered compartments and signature molded, drop-down fly bench and interior pockets, this pack is built to carry everything for a long day on the water. Two exterior pockets hold water bottles and the Yampa can be worn as a lumbar or a sling pack. The Encampment Lumbar Pack ($89.95) offers a simplistic design with a zippered main compartment for secure fly box storage, an additional front zippered compartment for easy access and cord loops for tools and accessory attachment. Compression straps help distribute the load or expand to hold a rain jacket, and two water bottle pockets adorn the exterior. This pack offers anglers three ways to wear it: as a lumbar pack, as a sling pack or as a chest pack. The Savage Creek Chest Pack ($89.95) and the Medicine Bow Chest Pack ($69.95) round out the recycled fabric product collection. The Savage Creek Chest Pack is a thoughtfully designed pack that contours the body for maximum comfort. One main storage compartment fits large fly boxes and the exterior slash pocket holds items needed quickly such as hemostats. The Medicine Bow is a bit smaller but has all of the same features including a zip down fly bench. This pack can either be worn as a chest pack or attach to a wader belt. Both packs offer the modular design to fit with a multitude of Fishpond’s backpacks.Growing Like a Fish TaleFishpond announced last summer it acquired Nomad Nets and brought its founder and designer Kevin Best on board.Nomad Nets are made from a carbon fiber and fiberglass composite making them extremely lightweight and durable. Besides withstanding heavy use, the composite nets are waterproof, weatherproof and buoyant. Available in five styles, Fishpond will incorporate nets into its accessories line and brand them Fishpond’s Nomad Series.“I was fed up with wooden nets that would break, sink and cause fatigue after carrying them around day after day, so I decided to combine my knowledge of sporting goods products with my love of fly fishing to create Nomad Nets,” said Best. “After meeting the crew at Fishpond and the initial acquisition talks began, I was very excited about the distribution and awareness a company of Fishpond’s stature could offer. I can’t wait to explore expanding the net line and creating spectacular products for anglers and outdoorsmen alike.”fishpond nomad netsAll nets come in dark green Original, Riffle Camo (a light grey/blue camo pattern) or Tailwater (a brown color with trout spots) with the exception of the Guide Net. Replacement netting will also be sold in clear or black in small for $18.95 and large for $22.95. Pricing ranges from $115.95 to $239.95.Four new pieces join the Westwater Collection this spring as well. Each piece in this collection features TPU welded fabric construction and YKK #10 water resistant zippers. The Westwater Roll Top Boat Bag ($189.95) has all of the features of the current boat bag but with a roll top design. The Westwater Lumbar Pack ($99.95) is ideal for anglers who carry a bit less gear, but it still holds plenty of essential tools, fly boxes and accessories. It also has an integrated net slot and features a mesh lumbar support for increased ventilation and comfort. The Westwater Zippered Duffel ($169.95) is a slightly smaller version of the Westwater Large Zippered Duffel. Coming in at just over 5,000 cu. in., this zippered duffel is perfect for shorter trips when gear needs protection. Rounding out the collection is the all-new Westwater Messenger Bag ($139.95). The streamline design features a large zippered flap pocket, a back zippered pocket for additional organization, a secure interior organization pocket, an interior laptop sleeve, and an adjustable, padded shoulder strap.Westwater series roll-top boat bag.Westwater series roll-top boat bag.For more information visit www.fishpondusa.comFishpond co-founder and co-owner John Le Coq.Fishpond co-founder and co-owner John Le Coq.last_img read more

Half-time: Chelsea 0 Stoke 0

first_imgChelsea dominated much of the first half at Stamford Bridge – but it was Stoke who came closest to scoring.Potters forward Jon Walters almost put his side ahead when he headed Glenn Whelan’s 19th-minute free-kick against the bar.Fernando Torres missed Chelsea’s best chance of the half when Juan Mata’s clever chip into the box left him with just keeper Asmir Begovic to beat, only for the striker to chest the ball down and then fail to connect with his shot.Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo opted to rotate his squad, leaving John Terry and Frank Lampard among the substitutes with Ramires partnering John Obi Mikel in midfield and Gary Cahill coming in an centre-back alongside David Luiz.Former England striker Michael Owen is on the bench for Stoke.Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Cole; Mikel, Ramires; Mata, Oscar, Hazard; Torres.Subs: Romeu, Lampard, Moses, Azpilicueta, Bertrand, Terry, Turnbull.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Boeing 787-10 and Airbus A319neo take first flights.

first_imgA Boeing 787-10 on its first test flight. Photo: Boeing. Boeing’s biggest Dreamliner and Airbus’ s smallest member of the A320neo family both took to the skies on Friday in a rare instance of two new aircraft types undertaking first flights on the same day.The Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner undertook its first flight at the US manufacturer’s facility in Charleston, South Carolina. The flight lasted four hours and 58 minutes and included tests on flight controls, systems and handling qualities. The 787-10 is a  stretch of the 787-9 that adds 18ft (5.5m) to the fuselage and can seat up to 330  passengers, about 14 per cent more than 787-9, and carry 15 per cent more freight. It cannot fly as far as the 787-9 — Boeing puts its range at 6430 nautical miles (11, 910km) as opposed to the 787-9s   6430 nm (14,140km) — but the company says it can still cover 90 per cent of global commercial airline routes. The 787-10 promises a 25 per cent fuel reduction per seat on the aircraft it replaces, up from 20 per cent on its sister Dreamliners,  and Boeing claims it will beat the competition by 10 per cent.It has won 149 orders from nine airlines across the world and will be introduced into service by launch customer Singapore Airlines.“From takeoff to landing, the airplane handled beautifully and just as expected,” said chief 787 pilot Tim Berg, who flew the plane with colleague Mike Bryan.  “The 787-10 is a fantastic machine that I know our customers and their passengers will love.”Watch the Boeing Webcast. The 787-10 will now undergo comprehensive flight testing before customer deliveries begin in the first half of 2018.Boeing says that since entering service in 2011, the 787 family has flown more than 152 million people on over 560 unique routes around the world, saving an estimated 14 billion pounds of fuel. The Airbus A319neo is the third member of the successful A320neo family and flew from Hamburg to Toulouse on Friday in a five-hour flight. The aircraft, powered by CFM International LEAP-1A   engines, allowed the crew to assess the aircraft’s general handling and main systems. It will remain in Toulouse to complete its flight test program. The smallest member of the family can also be powered by the Pratt & Witney PW1100G-JM geared turbofan engine and can fly up 7750km when equipped with sharklets. It is designed to deliver fuel savings of up to 15 per cent and seat up to 160 passengers or about 124 in a two-class configuration. The A319neo is particularly suited to difficult airports due to its short field performance and ability to operate in hot and high conditions.last_img read more

But I just want to be where I’m wanted. I like it here. It hasn’t been as planned, but I definitely want to be here.”The Cavaliers, though, had other plans and needed to do something rash while in a prolonged slump and with All-Star forward Kevin Love out with a broken left hand.Thomas, who turned 29 on Wednesday, wasn’t working out. He missed Cleveland’s first 36 games while coming back from a torn right labrum that knocked him out of last year’s playoffs. The Cavs tried to incorporate him into their offense, but it was forced and bogging them down.Cleveland is just 7-13 since Christmas Day, and the club’s slide has coincided with Thomas’ comeback. He played better on Wednesday night, scoring 13 points with seven assists in 31 minutes. But he’s a defensive liability on a defensively challenged team and the Cavs felt it was best to move him. While Thomas struggled on the floor, he didn’t help himself with some peculiar off-the-court comments.Following Tuesday’s embarrassing loss to the 17-win Orlando Magic — the Cavs blew a 21-point lead and scored nine points in the fourth quarter — Thomas questioned whether the team makes enough in-game adjustments. Those remarks were dismissed by coach Tyronn Lue, who said, “That’s not true.”Lue tweaked his rotations against the Timberwolves, giving more minutes to rookie Cedi Osman, who provided an infusion of needed energy. Late in the game, Thomas was pulled off the floor by Lue and the guard stood near Cleveland’s bench and shook his head in disappointment. Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC Cleveland completely changed its look — and perhaps its chances of winning a championship this season — on Thursday with a stunning sequence of deals. Cavs general manager Koby Altman traded six players, including Isaiah Thomas, Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose, and two future draft picks in moves designed to not only help them in the short term but could potentially help keep LeBron James beyond this season.Just like that, the Cavs traded nearly half their roster, got younger and maybe wedged themselves back into contention to make a fourth straight Finals appearance against Golden State.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSLillard, Anthony lead Blazers over ThunderSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutWatching from the West Coast, the defending champions took notice.READ: Cavaliers send Thomas, Frye to Lakers for Clarkson, Nance  Slow and steady hope for near-extinct Bangladesh tortoises Typhoon Kammuri accelerates, gains strength en route to PH LATEST STORIES “It’s interesting, really interesting,” Warriors forward Draymond Green said of Cleveland’s drastic midseason renovation. “It’s probably obviously something that they felt was needed. It’s how it’s suppose to be. Love you my guy!! #WadeCountyBack.”While he was reunited in Cleveland with James, Wade was coming off the bench and his role may have been further diminished by the other new additions. Wade, though, had an impact during his short time with the Cavs.“A definite Hall of Famer when his playing career is complete, his basketball legacy is cemented by how he carries himself both on and off the floor,” Altman said. “His work ethic and commitment to the game of basketball with such an illustrious career was greatly respected by his Cavs teammates and everyone in our front office.”The massive makeover is intended to help the Cavs make another title run in 2018 with James, who can opt out of his $35.6 million contract this summer and become a free agent. The 33-year-old James has said he would like to finish his career in Cleveland and Altman, who has only been in charge of the roster since July, gave James a team he can lead back to the Finals. In Jordan and Nance, whose father played for Cleveland, the Cavs are adding a pair of young players with upside.“Jordan and Larry add athleticism, energy and length to both ends of the court for us,” Altman said. “This trade is also a reflection of our continuing commitment to invest in our roster in ways that help us evolve and compete at the highest level now and into the future.”The Cavs also protected themselves if they lose James by hanging onto the first-round pick they acquired last summer from Boston for Thomas, Crowder and center Ante Zizic.ESPN was first to report the dizzying run of deals. Five reasons why India lost England series, No. 1 spot

first_imgM.S. Dhoni had to bear the insult of his first series loss and that too a 4-nil whitewash. The warriors are vanquished. The Test tour of England has spelt nothing but disaster for Indian cricket. From the word go, India floundered, then fell before being flattened. But to many, a few key mistakes forced the writing on the wall.  Mistake No 1 An undercooked Team India : Deprived of any quality rest, Team India has been on the road virtually every day in the recent past.  From a nerve-sapping World Cup to a draining IPL followed by the tour of Caribbean, a tired India were thrown into the deep end of the extreme English conditions with just a single warm-up game, truly under prepared before being out-rightly exposed.  Mistake No 2 Uninspired captaincy: He has been rightly hailed as captain courageous, guiding India from one triumph to another during his three seasons at the helm. But in England this summer, the Midas touch was missing. The leader was lying low, struggling to lift his side. No wonder, M.S. Dhoni had to bear the insult of his first series loss and that too a 4-nil whitewash. Mistake No 3 Injury mismanagement: It started with Zaheer Khan’s hamstring and ankle and ended with Virender Sehwag’s dodgy shoulder: Two of India’s prime match-winners, but two men who didn’t seem fit to be in the Indian eleven. While Zaheer paid the price for rushing back early, a reluctant Sehwag was forced to take field despite being only 80 per cent fit. Mistake No 4 Selection gaffes: While injuries can never be predicted, the best of sides are always ready with cover. But that’s an area India were seriously lacking in.  With Sehwag lying cold in India and Gambhir injured, the team was stranded at Trent Bridge without a second regular opener.  And then again, the BCCI delayed naming a replacement for the injured Zaheer despite the bowler limping out on Day 1 of the 1st Test. And what’s worse was: the selectors picked an unfit and off-colour R.P. Singh to add to India’s woes. Mistake No 5 Finally, the half-cooked technology on offer in the series hurt the Indians a lot more than the hosts.  After insisting on keeping LBWs out of the mix, the rub of the green went against India as they lost out on key decisions.advertisementlast_img read more

‘Pogba perfect for No. 10 role at Man Utd’

first_imgPaul Pogba Pogba perfect for No. 10 role at Man Utd? Parker hoping for end to position frustration Chris Burton 19:07 2/17/18 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Paul Pogba Manchester United Getty Images Paul Pogba Manchester United Premier League The French midfielder has seen plenty of questions asked of his contribution at Old Trafford, with Jose Mourinho having to fend off exit speculation Paul Pogba’s positional troubles at Manchester United are “frustrating” but he may be perfect for a No. 10 role, says Paul Parker. The Frenchman was returned to Old Trafford for £89 million in 2016 having established a reputation as one of the world’s best in a playmaking post at Juventus.United’s tactical approach under Jose Mourinho has seen him shifted around the Red Devils engine room, with his attacking instincts often being curtailed. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Questioning of his contribution, after being benched and substituted on a regular basis of late, has sparked transfer talk and forced his manager to play down talk of a rift.Parker hopes the issue can now be resolved as a matter of urgency, with the former United defender telling The Sun on an unfortunate situation at Old Trafford: “When I joined United, Sir Alex [Ferguson] signed me because of my defensive qualities and what I could add to the team from that perspective.“The improvements I made and tweaks to how I performed were implemented along the way, and I guess in Pogba’s case that’s what we are not seeing at the moment, because he’s being asked to play in a position he’s not entirely comfortable with.“We know he’s got outstanding qualities but while he isn’t being played in his favoured role, on the left hand side of a midfield three, he finds it difficult.“Certainly defensively anyway. It’s frustrating if you’re a United supporter because we’ve seen what he can do in that role for Juventus and at times for France.“The game comes very easy to Pogba and I just wonder, if long-term, he might be better suited in the number 10 role, where he can do what he likes more or less in that final part of the pitch.“Pogba’s at his best when he can be creative and make things happen going forward. Remove the shackles and get him in positions where he can go at players one versus one, or has the freedom to run in behind and ask questions of the opposition defence that way.“We know already that he gets on well with Romelu Lukaku, so why not try and get them nearer to one another on the pitch too, and see how that works.“Footballers are commodities and it’s a very different game to when I played. But somehow, Mourinho has to get Pogba playing in a way that makes the team better, and in the end, I think he will.“Mourinho has a track record of success everywhere he’s been and he’ll know he has a better chance of continuing that run with Pogba in his starting XI.”Mourinho has confirmed that Pogba will start an FA Cup fifth round clash with Huddersfield, with it hoped that he can start to rediscover form and confidence heading into the business end of the 2017-18 campaign.last_img read more

When it’s freezing cold at home, you’ve got to keep on the move and you don’t want the lads standing around too much.“So here we’ll work hard, especially over the next few days, and prepare for Sunday, but it allows us to maybe spend a little bit more time on the training ground and go into a little bit more detail, which we need at this moment.“As you can imagine, it’s quite a happy camp. When you’re winning football matches, you can’t put a price on the feeling that gives you, and the confidence and the belief.”You almost sense a calmness when you’re winning games. It’s great to see the lads enjoying themselves. The football’s flowing, the training’s good, they’re bouncing around the place, and it’s nice to see.” last_img read more

Diets containing GM maize have no harmful effects on health or metabolism

Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Dec 14 2018For six months, rats were fed a diet containing either GM maize (MON 810 or NK603) or non-GM maize, in varying concentrations. The researchers, using high-throughput biology techniques, did not identify any significant biological markers related to the transgenic maize diet. Neither did anatomic pathology examination reveal any alteration of the liver, kidneys or reproductive system of the rats fed diets containing these GMOs. This research, published on December 10, 2018 in Toxicological Sciences, does not reveal any harmful effects related to the consumption of these two types of GM maize in the rat even after lengthy periods of exposure. The researchers used two well-known types of GM maize: MON 810, which produces the protein Bt rendering it resistant to certain insects, and NK603 in which the modification of a gene renders it resistant to glyphosate. For 6 months, the rats were fed a diet containing either transgenic maize or non-GM control maize. This time period, which is double that of the test required by European regulations, is equivalent to one third of the average lifespan of rats. The objective of the researchers was to test for early biomarkers of biological function alterations in rats fed GM maize over periods of 3 and 6 months. For that, they used two ultra-sensitive high-throughput techniques: transcriptomics (gene expression) and metabolomics (study of the compounds derived from the body’s functioning). These techniques were used to identify and measure metabolites (amino acids, sugars and other small molecules) and to characterize the expression of messenger RNA and cellular microRNA. These methods are capable of detecting a broad spectrum of metabolic variations. The researchers identified markers able to differentiate the MON810 and NK603 diets. However, following the six-month period of the experiment, no significant differences were identified between the GM and non-GM diets, from the biological point of view.In addition, in the rats fed the GM diets, anatomic pathology techniques (macro- and microscopic study of the tissues to detect potential abnormalities) revealed no alteration of the organs, particularly the liver, kidneys and reproductive system. As such, the researchers did not detect any harmful effects of the MON810 and NK603 maize diets on the health and metabolism of the rodents, even after a lengthy exposure period.Related StoriesNew therapy shows promise in preventing brain damage after traumatic brain injuryALS mobility and survival could be improved by increasing glucoseHighlights and key takeaways from the 2019 Boston Bacterial Meeting (BBM)1 The GMO 90+ project In 2010, the French Ministry of Ecology launched the Risk’OGM program, in the context of the 2008 law on genetically modified organisms for the establishment of a new legal and regulatory framework based notably on the principle of a triple evaluation of the impact of GMOs – from the health, environmental and socioeconomic standpoints. To set this dynamic in motion and fulfil public authority requirements in terms of expertise, guidance and completed research on GMOs, two calls for research proposals were held, in 2010 and 2013, respectively. The GMO 90+ project was selected during the 2013 call for proposals, with the following scope: to test for biomarkers predictive of biological effects in the study of the subchronic toxicity (3 and 6 months) of GMOs in the rat. Driven by a consortium pooling the various scientific competences, the purpose of this research was to determine whether the feeding of rats with genetically-modified maize led to metabolic changes which could be linked to early effect biomarkers (measurable biological characteristic). The objective was to provide key data which could be used in risk evaluation processes. http://recherche-riskogm.fr/fr/page/gmo90plus2 List of project partners: 1-Toxalim (Research Centre in Food Toxicology), Université de Toulouse, INRA, ENVT, INP-Purpan, UPS, Toulouse, France. 2-INSERM UMR-S1124, Toxicologie Pharmacologie et Signalisation cellulaire, Université Paris Descartes, USPC, Paris, France 3- Centre de Recherche sur l’Inflammation (CRI), INSERM UMRS 1149, Paris, France. 4- Laberca, ONIRIS, UMR INRA 1329, Nantes, France 5- Université de Rennes, Inserm, EHESP, Irset (Institut de recherche en santé, environnement et travail) – UMR_S 1085, Rennes, France. 6- Methodomics, France. 7- Institut de Mathématiques de Toulouse, UMR5219 – Université de Toulouse, CNRS – UPS IMT, Toulouse, France. 8- Anses, Maisons-Alfort, France. 9- Profilomic, Saclay/Gif sur Yvette, France 10- UMR1332 Biologie du Fruit et Pathologie, INRA, Université de Bordeaux, Villenave d’Ornon, France. 11- UR 1264, MycSA, INRA, Villenave d’Ornon, France. 12- Laboratoire Reproduction et Développement des Plantes, University Lyon, ENS de Lyon, UCB Lyon 1, CNRS, INRA, Lyon, France 13- CRO CitoxLAB, Evreux.Source: https://presse.inserm.fr/en/mon-810-and-nk603-gm-maize-no-effects-detected-on-rat-health-or-metabolism/33249/ read more

Power grid fluctuations hidden in audio recordings proved a powerful tool for

The ‘electrical network frequency’ (ENF) of power grids is centered around 50 or 60 Hertz, and is picked up in audio recordings as a background hum. The ENF shifts up and down randomly, which provides each recording with a unique fingerprint that can be compared to the long-term records captured continuously and maintained at forensic labs.”The random fluctuations are consistent across different places within the same power grid,” explains team member Lilei Zheng. “As a consequence, recordings captured in different places at the same time will have ENF fingerprints showing the same fluctuations.”By visually inspecting the ENF, human investigators can reliably match recorded fluctuations to a time in the long-term records, but this is a laborious task best done by a computer. In response, the I2R team developed a similarity criterion called bitwise similarity (bSim) that mimics the way humans judge the similarity of two signals. The team tested bSim by using it to identify the timing of 187 audio recordings made around Singapore using various mobile phones. They found that bSim greatly outperformed previous similarity metrics, which were thrown into doubt by small deviations even when the general shapes of the signals were clearly similar. “bSim enables us to focus our attention on the overlapped parts instead of being drawn away by the deviated parts,” says Zheng.”The science behind ENF pattern matching has been proven to be reliable, like fingerprints and DNA,” says Thing. “It has been used in courts in various jurisdictions and the cases cut across many different crimes. We hope to extend our work from audio recordings to videos, which not only contain audio but may also enable us to ‘see’ the ENF through variations in lighting.””This innovative solution towards audio authenticity verification developed by I2R has already proven itself in actual use, and we are excited about the potential it holds,” says a representative of Singapore Police Force. Rare audio of indigenous languages saved by invention 100 years later Audio and video recordings are important sources of evidence in criminal investigations, especially as more electronic devices are in use now than ever before. However, for recordings to be admissible, investigators often need to determine the time they were made, which can be difficult. Now, a team led by Vrizlynn Thing at the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), in collaboration with the Singapore Police Force, has developed an impressive new system that reliably estimates the time of recordings by identifying small fluctuations in the frequency of the electrical power grid. Employees working at Apple’s Cupertino, Calif. headquarters will soon benefit from a new “concierge-like healthcare experience,” more evidence of big companies leveraging healthcare to both lure talent and streamline a costly expense.A new company called AC Wellness on Monday began advertising jobs both on its website and on sites such as Glassdoor for positions that include care navigator, phlebotomist and acute care physician.A lead care navigator overseeing the care of Apple employees will make around $144,000 a year and is expected to “always appear polished and composed,” according to Glassdoor. “Personal hygiene must be impeccable,” the ad reads.Citing a launch date of 2018, AC Wellness describes itself as an “independent medical practice dedicated to delivering compassionate, effective healthcare to the Apple employee population.”Apple declined to comment. AC Wellness did not immediately respond to a request for comment.LinkedIn, Facebook and other tech companies feature on-site doctors for their employees, a perk that is in line with tech company benefits that often include chef-cooked meals, massage therapists and bowling alleys.More: 4 ways Amazon-Berkshire-JPMorgan deal could shake up health careMore: Walgreens and AmerisourceBergen deal talks have cooled as takeover looks unlikelyMore: Apple clinics for your health? It almost just happenedThe more than 10,000 employees who work at Apple’s old Infinity Loop campus in Cupertino, between San Francisco and San Jose, access medical assistance through Apple Wellness Centers. Some of the new AC Wellness jobs are for Apple Park, the company’s new spaceship-like offices which eventually will house most of the iPhone-maker’s workers.Apple currently provides medical services through Crossover Health; the company’s Wellness Center site asks for employees to input their Crossover Health ID. In October, CNBC reported that Apple had been in discussions to acquire Crossover Health, but the deal fell through. The new venture, first reported by CNBC, is part of a growing shakeup of the traditional healthcare provider system and one that seems designed to give particularly large employers more control over their healthcare costs.Health care spending was 17.9% of the U.S. economy in 2016, or about $10,348 per person, according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.Amazon recently announced it was joining forces with Warren Buffett’s Bershire Hathaway and JP Morgan Chase to reinvent the healthcare space.Although few details are available about how the trio might handle such a makeover, experts say that there are savings to be had in both streamlining prescriptions and investing more heavily on disease and injury prevention. At Apple’s recent shareholder meeting, CEO Tim Cook said the company could make a “significant contribution” in the healthcare space, one that perhaps eventually incorporates the Apple Watch’s ability to track basic fitness markers.Apple also is looking to use its iPhone Health app to better aggregate and streamline patient medical records, something that could come into play when employees use the in-house Wellness Center.Tech rivals such as Google, Microsoft and Samsung have similar ambitions to untangle a records thicket that frequently leaves patients frustrated.
