Plaxico Burress Took A Twitter Jab At Jim Harbaugh, Michigan

first_imgPlaxico Burress close up.plaxico burress upset michigan state nebraska gameSince taking over at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh has certainly gone above and beyond in terms of recruiting. Whether it’s sleepovers, climbing trees, going to class with recruits or moving spring practice to Florida for a week, Harbaugh is committed to selling his vision in any way possible. The future is Harbaugh’s biggest selling point, as the Wolverines haven’t been elite lately. In recent years, Michigan has been on the short end of the stick against arch-rivals Michigan State and Ohio State. They’ve lost 11 of 12 to the Buckeyes and seven of eight to Sparty. Taking all this into account, former Michigan State star Plaxico Burress dropped a quick jab at Harbaugh and his recruiting tactics on Twitter this morning. According to Burress, while Harbaugh has to peddle his program, the Spartans simply have to point to the results. Looks like J Harbaugh is pulling out all stops to get kids to Michigan. We @MSU_Football just believe in the product. Don’t have to sell us— Plaxico Burress (@plaxicoburress) March 1, 2016Plax has a point because Michigan State has been the premier program in the state of Michigan the last several seasons. However, Harbaugh did lead his team to a 10-3 record in his first year and was one insane fluke play away from beating the Spartans. The Wolverines also have an outstanding recruiting class on the way. Will the Maize and Blue begin dominating its in-state rivals starting in 2016? We won’t go that far, but this series should be much closer in the coming years.last_img read more

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie Carries Out Mission To Peru

first_imgUNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie carried out an official visit to Peru last week.Angelina Jolie listens to Venezuelan women at the Albergue Sin Fronteras shelterCredit/Copyright: UNHCR/Santiago Escobar-JaramilloPeru is one of the countries most affected by the surge in Venezuelan refugees and migrants – the largest movement of people in Latin America’s recent history.Following up on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ recent visit to the region, Jolie undertook a three-day mission to assess the humanitarian needs of Venezuelan refugees and the challenges facing Peru as a host country, and to discuss the possible regional responses to the crisis.During her mission, the Special Envoy met refugees, representatives of the Government of Peru and organizations contributing to the humanitarian response. She visited programmes providing protection and assistance to asylum-seekers, refugees and host families, and observed Peru’s generous response to Venezuelan refugees and migrants.“I told President Vizcarra how much UNHCR appreciates the steps Peru has taken, to help Venezuelans have legal status and access to basic services,” said Jolie while in Peru. “And we discussed the regional efforts being carried out in the Quito process, which is a first step towards a regional solution.“We also spoke about what more the international community can and should be doing to support Peru and its neighbors.“The number of people displaced worldwide continues to increase, it now stands at 68.5 million people. One person is forcibly displaced every two seconds as a result of conflict or persecution.“There is justified public concern about this unprecedented movement of people across borders internationally. And a perception that the distinction between refugees and economic migrants, enshrined in international law, is being blurred.“Whereas economic migrants choose to move, often for very understandable reasons, refugees face an immediate threat to life and cannot return home safely and their protection becomes a shared international responsibility.“At a time when fundamental principles are being questioned, it is more important than ever that we have the systems and resources in place to identify people with genuine refugee and asylum claims, and to make sure that they have the support that they need. It is crucial to reinforce the rule of law, respect for human rights, international protection and asylum systems.“This applies as much to the situation in Mexico, where UNHCR is reinforcing its presence in the south, encouraging people to register and apply through legal means, where they can define their reasons for seeking asylum.“Most of all, wherever we live, we need our governments to do more to address the conflict and insecurity that is creating refugees, so that people can return to their countries. In my experience the vast majority of refugees want to do just that: they want to return home.”The Special Envoy focuses on major displacement crises, representing UNHCR and the High Commissioner at the diplomatic level. The Special Envoy Jolie last visited Latin America in 2012, for a mission to Ecuador, her third visit to meet then Colombian refugees in the region.last_img read more

Study Italys economic crisis has affected nutrition

first_imgMILAN — A new study shows that Italy’s long economic crisis is having an impact on nutritional health in the country synonymous with the Mediterranean diet. The Economist Intelligence Unit in an index presented Wednesday ranked Italy as eighth among 12 Mediterranean countries surveyed for nutritional health. That was largely due to childhood obesity, with 21 per cent of Italian children ages 6 to 10 at risk. Other factors include weak nutritional education and growing popularity of fast food. The survey, funded by the Barilla Foundation, said a likely factor in the unexpectedly low ranking was the increase in the percentage of people living in poverty since the 2008-9 financial crisis: 29 per cent compared with 14 per cent in first-placed France. The Associated Presslast_img read more

McAllister remains undefeated behind Clippers 52 victory

Columbus Clippers pitcher Zach McAllister came out with an undefeated record on the mound. As of Monday night, that still has not changed after Columbus defeated the Charlotte Knights, 5-2. McAllister faced 27 batters in the seven innings he pitched, giving up just five hits, two runs. He threw 102 pitches, an impressive 71 of them strikes. “It’s one thing where I got into a little groove and was able to carry it,” McAllister said. “I think that’s kind of big for me, having that good feeling on the mound and taking advantage of it when I can.” McAllister is now 6-0 on the season. McAllister was drafted in 2006 out of Illinois Valley Central High School by the New York Yankees. The Cleveland Indians acquired McAllister in August 2010. The learning curve has been a little harder for him coming straight out of high school, but he has handled it with grace. “I had some success early in my career at the lower levels, then this past year was a little rough for me, statistics-wise,” McAllister said. “I think that one of the best things to happen to me was to grow from the struggle.” The 6’6″ right-hander impresses his colleagues. “He keeps making strides each outing,” Clippers manager Mike Sarbaugh said. “His slider was really good, he did a good job of getting us off the field quick, and those are good nights when you are a pitcher.” Columbus jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. First baseman Travis Buck’s RBI single brought in center fielder Ezequiel Carrera, giving the Clippers a 1-0 lead. Columbus put another on the board when designated hitter Cord Phelps’ sacrifice fly brought in shortstop Jason Donald. A Buck pop-out put Columbus up 3-0 in the third inning, shortly followed by Donald’s solo shot in the fifth, making it 4-0. Charlotte cut the score to 4-1 in the sixth inning when shortstop Eduardo Escobar’s double brought in second baseman Gookie Dawkins. Center fielder Jordan Danks put the only damper on the night for McAllister when he crunched a solo homerun in the seventh inning, making it 4-2. McAllister was still not be phased, as he ended the inning striking out Escobar. Columbus put their final run on the board in the eighth inning, making it 5-3. McAllister is already looking forward to improving more. “I just got to go out and take every day like it’s your last one out here,” he said. “Today was a great day for me, and I am happy, but the next one is the one that matters for me.” Columbus is now 24-7 on the year. Charlotte dropped to 12-18. They will continue their four-game-series against Charlotte tomorrow night at Huntington Park at 6:35 p.m. read more
